The Best 2x2 Speed Cubes Review Guide
Published: September 2016.
The 2x2 speedcubes competition became the 2nd most popular competition after the original 3x3, therefore there are many different successful cubes available. In this guide I will review the best 2x2 speed cubes in the market, and will advise on the single best among them.
This guide is the result of a vast research I made, checking all the popular cubes, speedcubers opinions, and world-record holders' cube chooses. This is relevant for both world class speedcubers and new cubers who would like to get a great cube to practice with.
Intro
I would recommend reading my main best speedcubes guide where I explain what qualities I'm looking for in a speed cube.In general, for the 2x2 category: The mechanism of the cube is relatively simple. That leads to a very high performance in all aspects. The most important factors are: speed and corner-cutting without getting the cube stuck.
The Best 2x2 Speed Cubes Today
I included here 3 cubes. These cubes are considered to be the best, above all others, and used for breaking the world records. Although I gave a different overall score each, they are all awesome, and it can still come to a matter of self-preference.DaYan 2x2 50mm
Where to get: eBay | AmazonThis cube was used in both the current single 2x2 world record (0.49s !) and the average WR (1.51s). Used by most of the speedcubers today. This cube is amazingly fast, with a smooth and quiet touch (not very clicky and loud). Good pop-resistance ability (however in unusual situations it can happen). Almost never get stuck. This is probably the best 2x2 cube in the world.
Overall score: 9.3
Speed: 9.5 ; Corner cutting: 9 ; Reverse cutting: 9 ; Pops resistance: 9.5 ; Lock-up resistance: 9.5 ; Corner twist resistance: 9 ; Weight: 84 gr
MoYu LingPo
Where to get: eBay | AmazonUsed by many world-class 2x2 speedcubers like Mats Valk. This cube is very fast and smooth, almost immune to pieces pop-ups, and with really good corner cutting. Some would say this cube is as good as the DaYan, however it come to self-preference.
Overall score: 9.1
Speed: 9.5 ; Corner cutting: 8.5 ; Reverse cutting: 8.5 ; Pops resistance: 9 ; Lock-up resistance: 9 ; Corner twist resistance: 9 ; Weight: 72 gr
MoYu WeiPo
Where to get: eBay | AmazonThis cube is MoYu's best 2x2 cube. It is the next generation of the MoYu LingPo. This cube is similar from both outside and inside to the LingPo, however better in performance in all aspects. Including better corner-cutting. It will reverse corner-cut about 3/4 of a piece and will almost never get locked-up. This cube is a little bit heavier than the LingPo which gives it a more "stable" and pleasant feel.
Overall score: 9.2
Speed: 9.5 ; Corner cutting: 9 ; Reverse cutting: 9 ; Pops resistance: 9 ; Lock-up resistance: 9.5 ; Corner twist resistance: 9 ; Weight: 78 gr
So, which one should I get?
All of these cubes above are the greatest in the market, and each of them will be a good choice. The MoYu WeiPo is the next generation of the LingPo, so I would recommend going for it over the LingPo. Although it comes to small differences and a matter of self-preferences, I would definitely recommend for the world breaking Dayan 2x2 50mm cube over the MoYu WeiPo. It holds the world record for both single and average solving, and has an amazing feel in hand.Watch the current 0.49s WR by Maciej Czapiewski - with DaYan 2x2 50mm
